Prosthodontics
Doctor I don’t have confidence to smile. I lost my tooth in an accident
The word “prosthodontics” is definitely a mouthful! Prosthodontics (pronounced prahs – tho – dawn – ticks) is a specialty field under the umbrella of dentistry. Another way to describe prosthodontics is prosthetic dentistry.
Prosthodontics is a recognized dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues. A prosthodontist is highly trained in cosmetics, dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, temporomandibular disorders (TMJ/TMD), and more.
The term “prostho” means replacement and “dentist” means dealing with teeth. Essentially, prosthodontists are the recognized experts when anything needs to be replaced in your mouth. This can range from a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth and gums in the mouth. While many other dentists can do some of these treatments, prosthodontists are specialists dedicated to this type of care.
Prosthodontists have advanced training in restoring and replacing teeth. Prosthodontists are considered the leaders of the dental treatment plan. They regularly lead teams of general dentists, specialists, and other health professionals to develop solutions for your dental needs.
Prosthodontics has four major divisions: (1) fixed prosthodontics, (2) removable prosthodontics, (3) maxillofacial prosthetics. (4) Implant prosthodontics.
Removable prosthodontics is subdivided into removable partial denture prosthodontics and complete denture prosthodontics.
FIXED PROSTHODONTICS is the branch of prosthodontics concerned with the replacement and/or restoration of teeth by artificial substitutes that are not removable from the mouth.
REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS is the branch of prosthodontics concerned with the replacement of teeth and contiguous structures for edentulous or partially edentulous patients by artificial substitutes that are removable from the mouth.
MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHETICS is the branch of prosthodontics concerned with the restoration and/or replacement of somatognathic and associated facial structures by artificial substitutes that may be removed on a regular or elective basis.
IMPLANT PROSTHODONTICS is the branch of prosthodontics concerning the replacement of missing teeth and/or associated structures by restorations that are attached to dental implants.
